Teaching & Learning

At David Scott School, we provide a student-centred and inclusive learning environment that enables students to fully engage in classroom based and real-life skill development. Our learning environment is supported by high educator-student ratios with a focus on safety and the provision of evidence-based conditions for students to thrive.

The DSS curriculum has been developed to provide all students with structured approach to learning that enables each individual to seek the knowledge, skills and conditions they need to complete their schooling and to make a successful transition from school to employment, training or further education. To achieve this, DSS has developed an innovative VCE with a Vocational Major as well as a Victorian Pathways Certificate. The delivery of this curriculum occurs during school hours for three days a week (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday), with vocational training, work placements or work experience opportunities, student support groups, parent/student/staff meetings and check-ins available on the other two days.

Our teachers work with students to recognise their personal strengths, interests, goals, and experiences to create a personalised, integrated, and contextualised learning experience. The DSS learning community supports collaborative learning, where students are encouraged to work together to identify and use their strengths to solve problems and share ideas. DSS educators use a range of teaching strategies, including project-based learning and hands-on, real-world opportunities, to engage and challenge our students.

The classroom experience at DSS is supported by a teacher and education support officer at all times but is also strongly connected to the wellbeing and engagement team, careers and pathways as well as the technology team. Within this model, students are encouraged to be active agents in their learning, curious about the world around them and increasingly connected to broad aspirations for their futures.

Victorian Pathways Certificate:

What is the Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC) at David Scott School?

At David Scott School, we understand that every student has a unique learning journey. That’s why we offer the Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC) for students who may not be ready to complete the Victorian Certificate of Education with a Vocational major (VCE-VM). Our inclusive, flexible, and enriched curriculum aims to develop our students’ skills, knowledge, values, and capabilities for success in personal and civic life while supporting their aspirations and future employment goals.

The VPC aligns with Level 1 in the Australian Qualifications Framework and can be a pathway to the VCE.

VPC includes units in:

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Personal development skills
  • Work-related skills

At David Scott School, the assessment of VPC studies is school-based, and there are no external assessments. Students who complete the VPC receive a certificate and a Statement of Results, which can be used to demonstrate their achievements and capabilities to future employers, training providers, and educational institutions.

VCE Vocational Major:

At David Scott School, the VCE Vocational Major (VM) is a minimum two-year program designed to give students greater choice and flexibility to pursue their strengths and interests while also developing the skills and capabilities needed to succeed in further education, work, and life. The VM program prepares students to transition into apprenticeships, traineeships, further education and training, university (via non-ATAR pathways), or directly into the workforce.

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Personal development skills
  • Work-related skills
  • Vocational education and training (VET) at the Certificate II level

The VCE VM program at David Scott School offers flexible delivery options to meet the needs of students who may learn at different paces or transition into the VCE VM program during the academic year. These flexible delivery options include mid-year entry, extended delivery of a single VCE VM unit, and concurrent delivery of Units 1 and 2 or Units 3 and 4 across two semesters.
