BELONGING BEFORE LEARNING — A STUDENT’S VOICE
“It’s like you’re on a surfboard, or maybe a skateboard, and you’re going so fast you can’t stop. And if you try to, you’ll crash. But then suddenly there’s someone there. You’re still on the board — but they’re with you, helping you slow down and making it seem okay.”
– David Scott School student, 17
For many young people, this is what school has felt like — overwhelming, unsafe, and impossible to navigate alone.
David Scott School exists to change that experience.
WHO WE ARE — AND WHY WE EXIST
David Scott School is an independent specialist senior secondary school established to support young people who have experienced marginalisation, exclusion, or disengagement from mainstream education.
Our students are not defined by a single story. They bring with them diverse strengths, talents, and capabilities — but many have also experienced:
- trauma or disrupted schooling
- mental health challenges
- family instability or caring responsibilities
- housing insecurity
- social and economic disadvantage
- repeated experiences of exclusion or failure within traditional systems
Educational connectedness is a key determinant of life chances, yet access to opportunity is not evenly distributed. David Scott School exists to challenge that inequality, remove barriers to learning, and rebuild young people’s confidence in themselves and their future.
Too often, these young people have been told — directly or indirectly — that school is “not for them”. We believe the opposite.
EDUCATION THAT MEETS YOUNG PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE
At David Scott School, education is personalised, relational, and grounded in evidence.
We recognise that learning cannot be separated from wellbeing, identity, or life context. For many of our students, re-engaging with education first requires:
- safety
- predictability
- trust
- time
- strong relationships with adults who do not give up on them
Our approach is intentionally student-centred. Young people are active participants in shaping their learning, not passive recipients of instruction.
“It doesn’t matter what you come to us with — where you live, what you’ve done, what you look like, or how much school you’ve missed. Every student deserves learning that is meaningful, rigorous, and connected to real life.”
– David Scott School staff member
HOW CHANGE HAPPENS — SUPPORTING THE WHOLE YOUNG PERSON
David Scott School supports students across three interconnected areas of their lives. These areas are intentionally integrated — progress in one supports progress in the others.
“I didn’t think school was for people like me anymore. Here, they actually listen. They see what you’re good at, not just what you’ve messed up.”
— David Scott School student
SEE THE IMPACT — STUDENTS IN THEIR OWN WORDS
This short video shares the lived experience behind our work — young people reflecting on belonging, trust, safety, and second chances.
What you will see and hear is consistent throughout our community:
- relationships matter
- being known matters
- having adults who stay matters
- education works when young people feel they belong.
“Here, you’re not just a number. People actually take the time to understand you.”
— David Scott School student
“Belonging comes before learning. Once young people feel safe, everything else can start to shift.”
— David Scott School educator
From disconnection to direction — student pathways.
For many students, arriving at David Scott School is not the end of a journey — it is the beginning of a new one.
Young people are supported to:
- rebuild confidence in learning
- develop practical skills
- explore realistic post-school options
- transition into further education, training, or employment\
These outcomes are not accidental. They are the result of time, care, and sustained support.
“For me, I didn’t really need the teaching stuff at first. I needed help figuring out why staying at school mattered. Now I’m applying for an apprenticeship. I’ll get paid, keep learning — and even my dad is on board.”
— Senior David Scott School student
